An exhibition that sets out to reflect

On the 175th anniversary of Belgian independence Brussels, the European capital and world capital of the strip cartoon, welcomes no less than the first great original exhibition of the world of the indomitable Gauls!

The Mirror World of Asterix is nothing like anything else you may have seen about the world of the strip cartoon. Instead, it is an exhibition that sets out to reflect on the codes and values of the universe created in 1959 by two authors, René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, who had no idea what the consequences of their action would be. Very irresponsible of them, in fact, for because of their albums children all over the world find it hard not to think of the heroes of the Gaulish village as real people.

Whenever a school-teacher asks his or her pupils to say what they know about the Gallic Wars, the reply is invariably along the lines of: "All Gaul was occupied by the Romans, except for Asterix's village, because Asterix and his friends had the magic potion!"

To make up for this collateral damage, we have tried to put the work in what we are not afraid to describe as its proper perspective. And after every possible kind of medical and scientific analysis, an image did indeed appear in the mirror: the Asterix albums show us a slightly distorted reflection of ourselves, one that makes us smile and laugh.

So be prepared … you are about to discover everything, or almost everything, about the world of our favourite heroes (there are thousands of toys and other items based on the legendary stories here, while dozens of originals are shown for the first time), in an exhibition intended to make you like your reflection in your own mirror better than before.
